From the very moment that you decide you want to kick the habit, the battle to give up smoking will begin. Perhaps the hardest part about giving up smoking is when the urges that come with the process of withdrawal begin to hit you, pushing you to smoke again. What most people don't realize is that most of these urges are just temporary and will pass if you can learn to fight them. Here are 10 tips to help you kick the habit for good and give up smoking for the rest of your life.
Tip #1 - The key to winning the battle against smoking is to have patience. It is a tough process that takes a long time to work through if you want the truth. Because it is such a tough rehabilitation process, you will need to be as patient as possible in order to succeed.
Tip #2 - Remember to just take things one day at a time. The process is different for everyone so it is difficult to determine how long the process will take, which is why taking things day by day is so important. With every single day that passes, the cravings will get weaker and weaker, and you will soon grow strong enough to eventually beat them.
Tip #3 - Do not allow negative thoughts to build around you, as they will only make you want to start smoking again. If you stay positive and stay focused on your ultimate goal, you will stay much more motivated to kick the habit for good and get on track toward living a healthier smoke-free life.
Tip #4 - Be all-around healthy, take good care of your most basic needs by eating healthy foods and drinking lots of water. As the toxins from the nicotine and other chemicals begin to leave your body, eating a healthy diet and staying properly hydrated will help them to flush out much faster. Exercise and staying active is also an essential part of the process, as is ensuring that you are getting enough rest each day.
Tip #5 - Stay away from alcohol, as it is a common trigger to most people and increases the urge to smoke. A lot of people associate smoking and drinking together as the habits are very much related to one another.
Tip #6 - Remove all stress from your life to help you give up smoking. Stress is one of the most common triggers that will push you to smoke. Especially during the withdrawal period you should work to avoid all stress.
Tip #7 - Know that the urge to start smoking will hit you again in the middle of this process. Don't be surprised or give into the temptation of the mid-rehabilitation cravings that hit everyone half-way through the process. Learn to ignore this urge early on in the beginning of your rehabilitation and you will be able to fight the mid-process urges much more easily.
Tip #8 - Know that when you quit smoking it won't be easy. If you have friends that are also looking to quit smoking or know others who have already gone through the same process, it can help to talk with them about what you are dealing with. Just talking to someone that understands can help you to realize that you are not alone, that others completely understand everything that you are going through.
Tip #9 - Just one cigarette is never ever just one cigarette - it always leads to more. If you give in to the urge to smoke just once it will undo all the hard work you have put into the process and you'll have to start all over again. There are counselors that you can speak with that can help you get through the urges.
Tip #10 - Always remember and remind yourself of the reasons you decided to quit. Stay motivated on track by keeping the focus on the reasons that you decided to give up smoking in the first place. Lee Hugh |
