Former President Lyndon Johnson's youngest daughter, Luci Baines Johnson, is being treated at the Mayo Clinic for what doctors suspect is Guillain Barre Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the nervous system.

62 year old Luci Baines Johnson was admitted to a hospital in Austin, Texas on Wednesday after experiencing weakness in her arms and legs.  However, she was flown to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota Friday, where she remains in the neuro-intensive care unit.  Doctors are monitoring the potential case of Guillain Barre Syndrome.
Reports say that Johnson had a mild viral illness before this, a sore throat and hoarseness that might have been some kind of warning sign.

Guillain-Barre syndrome affects the nerves that control movement and can cause paralysis.

Doctors are continuing their tests and Johnson is also undergoing immunoglobulin treatment for her presumptive diagnosis.

The cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome is unknown, but its sudden and unexpected onset can make it a devastating disorder.  Marisa Leigh
