Question : MY husband has difficulty falling asleep. He is also suffering from severe hair loss. I'm not sure if this is due to his stressful career. Answer : STRESS is usually defined as a response to conditions and events, both routine and out of the ordinary. No one can completely escape its effects. Stress depletes the flow of oxygen, which cells need for maintenance and health. It might be the main culprit of hair loss and insomnia in this case. Besides, hair loss and sleepless nights, chronic stress may also cause metabolism problems, indigestion, heartburn and decreased sex drive. Meditation is perhaps the best possible way to reduce stress. Keeping a pet or going for physical activity may be helpful. A good diet also helps in stress management. You should prepare foods that are rich in vitamins and flavonoids for your husband. He should take food that helps to promote sleep such as oatmeal, whole-grain cereals and breads. His diet should also be free of caffeine, chocolate and tea as well as alcohol. He should take a vitamin B complex that helps the nervous system function, reduces anxiety and immune system damage and improves brain function. Other nutrients like calcium and magnesium may also promote good sleep and help one cope with stress. The mineral zinc will help to prevent hair loss and strengthen the roots. It helps heal wounds, promotes healthy skin and boosts immune function. Avoid excessive hair colouring and the use of hot hair dryers. Never brush wet hair as this can weaken and break it. Use a mild shampoo and rinse with warm or cool water and gently towel dry. He should go to bed at a set time each night and get up at the same time each morning. Relax before bed -- reading or simply enjoying relaxing routines will make it easier to fall asleep. Avoid daytime napping. Anonymous
